6 Very Collectible Modern Furniture Makers

by admin on February 2, 2009

Think of collectible furniture, you immediately think of Antiques but there has been a great bull market in furniture from the 1950s to the 1980s.

1) Tommi Parzinger-1903 to 1981

I love the strong colours which this cabinet has and the hinges are excusite and he was not known for his use of strong liquerish colours.

2) George Nakashima 1905-1990

This cofee table is a beautiful contrast between a straight lined base and a top which suggests it was just sliced out of a tree.

3) Paul Evans 1931-1987

He was a master of using beautiful surfaces, he hired a welder to put metal on wood, you just want to get closer to his creations to have a closer look. One of the tricks Paul Evans pulls out time and again is the ability to make a reader asks what the object is, the cabinet is the case in point. You have to ask yourself what is it that I am seeing ? Look at the wall he creates and the fun he had mirroring the two shapes.

Look at the contrast being created by a smooth bright shape and rugged gothic look on the side of the sofa. The outdoor versus the indoors and the rugh versus the smooth.

4) Karl Springer 1930 -1991

Think about it the 1970s were not really known for good taste but Karl Springer was reaching for excellence even in those somewhat sorry times , the table above is another example of good taste.

4) Wendell Castles 1932-

He is better know for his sculptures but he is a very interesting furniture maker and he is a master at using rich colours, his best known piece of furniture is the sofa- it showcases his love of sculpture.

5) James Mont (1904-1978)

He was apparently a favourite of the holly wood crowd and even underground figures, the side board show case his use of gilt, his modernism had an Asian touch stemming from his Turkish roots.

Are you aware that someone threw some of these pieces in the skip to keep up with fashion?  We need to be extra careful with what we throw away, it might be valuable in ten years time.
